After a blistering summer and as the calendar turns to fall, many are planning trips to view the glorious fall foliage found in New England, the Upper Midwest and Rocky Mountains.
Because of the oppressive heat in parts of the country, this year’s leaf peeping season might be subdued in some areas. Experts say the best places to check out fall foliage this season is likely to be the Northeast, Great Lakes and West.
So when should you book your vacation? Leaves start to change colors in the middle of September in far-north locations. Peak colors can last through early November the farther south you travel. By late September leaves start to change in the Upper Midwest and Western states. New England and the Pacific Northwest will hit peak colors by mid- to late-October. Areas like the central U.S., Gulf Coast and part of the coastal mid-Atlantic, the most brilliant colors are not expected until later in October and during the first weeks of November, though this part of the zone was hit hard by heat, which affects trees and the display they give us.
Though trying to hit peak color can be difficult, mid-October is a good bet for the majority of the country. According to the Farmer’s Almanac, In the weeks before their transformation, trees prefer warmish, sunny days and crisp, cool nights to bring on the most vibrant color transformation.
If it gets too cold, too fast, leaf-viewing time will be condensed. An early frost can lead to brittleness for already-thirsty leaves and impact how long those leaves can hang on branches before they fall.

Leaf peeping experts say that the “when” of fall foliage matters nearly as much as the “where.” For the best experience, not only should leaves be near their peak colors, but the weather should be agreeable, too. Avoid rainy, windy days, when the leaves (and you) will be waterlogged. Strong wind in late fall can blow the leaves off the trees in a matter of hours, so keep that in mind while planning. Experts say that a lightly overcast day actually improves the colors of the leaves, making them pop against the somber skies while others prefer to bask in autumn’s brilliance under blue skies and full sun.
